Warhawks Ride Red-Hot Shooting to 86-65 Victory Over Nicholls State

THIBODAUX, La. - ULM shot a blistering 62 percent from the field in route to an 86-65 victory over Nicholls State Monday evening inside Stopher Gym. It was the first win of the season for the Warhawks, who improved to 1-6.

The Warhawks shot 65.5 percent in the second half and outscored the Colonels 50-31 in the final 20 minutes.  It was ULM's highest scoring output of the season and its highest shooting percentage in a game since December of 2009.

Sophomore guard Charles Winborne set a career high in points for the second straight game with 19 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting. Senior guard Fred Brown scored 15 points and senior guard Hugh Mingo added 13 points, while freshman Trent Mackey chipped in 12 points and senior Fabio Ribeiro contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

ULM used a 9-0 run to build a 75-59 lead and put the game out of reach with 5:20 remaining. Brown and Winborne each had 3-pointers during the run, while senior Christian Bibi Ndongo contributed a three-point play.

The Warhawks scored eight straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers from Brown, to build a 52-44 advantage midway through the second half. Mackey hit his third 3-pointer of the game to extend the ULM lead to 57-48 with 10:26 to play.

Mingo hit a jumper just inside the 3-point line with two seconds remaining in the first half as ULM took a 36-34 advantage at halftime. The Warhawks shot 57.1 percent in the half, including making 8 of its final 10 shots.

The lead switched hands 11 times in the first half as neither team led by more than six.

Nicholls State was led by Sam McBeath and Chris Talkington, who each chipped in 12 points on the night. Bryan Hammond had 12 points and Sterling Bailey totaled 10 points for the Colonels.

The Warhawks host in-state rival Louisiana Tech Saturday at 7:30 p.m. inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
