Warhawks Fall at Home to Nicholls State

MONROE, La. - Nicholls State shot 50 percent from the field and never trailed in an 82-70 victory over ULM Monday evening inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

The Warhawks, who defeated Nicholls State 86-65 two weeks ago in Thibodaux, shot just 38.5 percent from the field to fall to 1-9 on the season. Sophomore Charles Winborne led ULM with a career-best 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field.

Senior Hugh Mingo scored in double figures for the second straight game with 11 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore Steven McClellan contributed seven points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

ULM finished with a 42-35 rebounding advantage and had a season-best 17 offensive boards against the Colonels. Despite coming in shooting over 70 percent from the free-throw line, the Warhawks struggled Monday by going 12-of-21.

ULM got as close as 62-54 with 5:20 remaining in the game, but Nicholls State responded by scoring seven straight points to put the game out of reach.

The Colonels (3-6) scored the first eight points of the game and led by as many as 18 (35-17) with 4:31 remaining in the first half. A jumper and a 3-pointer from senior Fred Brown cut the lead to 37-22 with 1:59 remaining before the half. Sophomore R.J. McCray knocked in a pair of free throws to close out the half with Nicholls State leading 37-25.

Trevon Lewis paced the Colonels with a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds, while Bryan Hammond added 19 points and five assists.

The Warhawks wrap up a two-game homestand Thursday against Northwestern State at 7 p.m.
