TERRE
HAUTE, Ind. - ULM put together its best defensive performance of the season,
but it was not enough as Indiana State topped the Warhawks 50-35 Wednesday
inside the Hulman Center. The Sycamores completed a sweep of the Warhawks this
season as they also won 71-59 earlier this season in Monroe.
The Warhawks
limited the Sycamores to 37 percent shooting for the game and the 50 points
were the fewest a ULM opponent has scored this season, however ULM couldn't
muster enough offense as they shot 31.1 percent and converted just 3 of 14 from
3-point range.
Sophomore
center Steven McClellan led the Warhawks offensively for the second straight game with eight points -- all in the first
half -- and six rebounds. McClellan finished 4 of 9 from the field in 22
minutes. Freshman Trent Mackey and senior Hugh Mingo each contributed six
points for the Warhawks.
ULM (1-12)
went scoreless for just over four minutes midway through the second half as
Indiana State extended its lead with an 8-0 run to 42-22 with 5:29 remaining. Sophomore
R.J. McCray broke the drought with a pair of free throws with 4:49 to play. The
Warhawks cut the deficit to 15 points on four occasions late, but that is as
close as they would get.
Indiana
State (9-2) was led by 12 points each from Jordan Printy and Carl Richard.
Printy knocked in four of Indiana State's five 3-pointers in the game, while
Richard hurt the Warhawks at the free-throw line, going 6 of 8.
ULM
limited Indiana State to just 39.1 percent shooting in the first half, but
trailed 22-15 at the break. The Warhawks shot 36.8 percent and went just 1 of 6
from beyond the arc in the half. McClellan kept ULM competitive with eight of
the Warhawks' 15 points in the first half.
After
falling quickly behind 8-2, the Warhawks battled back with six straight points -
all by McClellan -- to tie the score at 8-all with 10:43 remaining before the
break.
Indiana
State used an 11-2 run to extend its lead to as large as 21-12 with 1:24
remaining in the half. Senior Fred Brown sank a 3-pointer with 59 seconds left
to move the Warhawks within six.
ULM has
eight days off before opening the Sun Belt Conference slate Thursday (Dec. 29)
against Western Kentucky at 4:30 p.m. inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
