Warhawks Roll on with Two Wins

MONROE, La. – The ULM women's softball team continued its successful start to the 2011 season Saturday as it claimed a 2-1 win over Eastern Illinois and a 6-1 win over Southeast Missouri State to remain the only unbeaten team in the ULM Mardi Gras Classic. The Warhawks' 4-0 start is the first since 2006 when they won 10-straight games to open the season.

Miyuki Navarrette recorded three runs, three hits, one RBI and two stolen bases in a combined 5-for-5 performance at home plate to lead the Warhawks. Brianna Love went 3-for-6 with two runs, two hits, one RBI and two stolen bases. Samantha Riojas, Elena DiMattia and Regina Ayala each had one run and Jessica Olguin and Roxy Cassel each drove in two RBI. 

Tiffany Mills earned her second win of the season in the circle against Eastern Illinois with three strikeouts, four hits, one walk and one run. Jessica Chastka picked up her first win of the season after allowing seven hits while striking out four for one run and one walk. 

Game One Recap:
Navarette headlined the Warhawks with a 3-for-3 performance at home plate which included two runs, two hits and one RBI. Olguin and Cassel each had two RBI while Love added one RBI, one run and two hits. Chastka earned the win in the circle after throwing all seven innings for seven hits, four strikeouts and one run. 

Cheyenne Gipson scored the lone run for Southeast Missouri State while also having one hit in four attempts. Carmen Fowler collected three hits and a RBI while Evan Sallis, Shelby Kuryllo and Melissa Walker each also had a hit. 

Love led off the first inning with a walk before Olguin hit a sac bunt to advance her to second. Cassel drove Love home with a single through the right side to take an early 1-0 lead. 

Regina Ayala was hit by a pitch before Katie Girardi walked and Riojas singled to right field to load the bases in the second inning. Back-to-back RBI singles by Navarrette and Love tacked on two runs for the Warhawks before Riojas and Navarrette made it home to build a 5-0 advantage. 

The Redhawks scored their lone run of the game in the third inning as Gipson reached first on a fielding error. A Sallis walk advanced Gipson to second before a Fowler RBI single brought her home. 

ULM added an insurance run during the sixth inning as Navarrette singled up the middle and stole second and third base before making it home off an Olguin single. 

Game Two Recap:
Love and Navarrette each scored the only runs for ULM in its game against Eastern Illinois. Navarrette went 2-for-2 while Love went 2-for-3 and added a stolen base. Mills pitched all seven innings in the win and allowed four hits and three strikeouts. 

Ashley Anderton had one run and one hit in three appearances at home plate while Ashleigh Westover, Reynae Hutchinson and Maria Sorrentino each also had one hit. Stephanie Maday suffered the loss in the circle for the Panthers after allowing three hits, two runs, and five strikeouts in six innings of work.

Eastern Illinois was the first to score in the second inning as Anderton reached first on a throwing error before a Carly Willert sac bunt advanced her to second.  Anderton stole home to put the only run on the scoreboard for the Panthers. 

Navarrette was the first to reach for the Warhawks in the third inning after singling to right field followed by Love who singled on a fielder's choice. A fielding error allowed Navarrette to score before Love also made it home on an error. 

ULM will wrap up the Mardi Gras Classic Sunday with two final games as it faces Eastern Illinois at 1 p.m. followed by Indiana State at 3 p.m.
