NATCHITOCHES, La. -- ULM
belted out a season-high 14 hits and got a solid starting pitching performance
from Randy Zeigler in a 10-5 victory over New Orleans Saturday afternoon on day
two of the NSU Invitational at Brown-Stroud Field.
Four Warhawks finished with
multiple hits and all nine starters had at least one hit. Corben Green led the
Warhawks with a 3-for-5 afternoon and has now hit safely in all seven games this season.
Caleb Clowers was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, Joey Rapp was 2-for-4 with two
doubles and three runs scored and Jordy Poche was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Matt
Laird broke the game open with a grand slam in the seventh inning.
Zeigler (1-0) struck out five
and allowed four earned runs over seven innings of work in his first start as a
Warhawk. The sophomore southpaw retired 10 batters in a row from the fourth through seventh innings.
ULM (3-4) jumped out to a 3-0
lead after a Poche RBI single in the second and a two-run double by Clowers in
the third.
Nolan Church tied the game
with one swing of the bat in the UNO (1-5) half of the third inning. Church hit
a 3-run homer to left field following back-to-back one-out singles by the top
of the Privateer lineup.
The Warhawks strung together four
singles in the fourth inning to push a pair of runs across the plate and regain
the lead, 5-3. Jeremy Sy singled through the ride side of the infield to score
Poche and two batters later Judd Edwards drove home Jarrett Hammond with a
single to short.
Laird's grand slam, which
ended an 0-for-10 slump to open the season by the Warhawk center fielder, came
after singles by Clowers and Green and a walk by Rapp. After UNO pushed one
run across in the bottom of the seventh, Green drove home Rapp with a single to
right to give the Warhawks their third game with double-digit runs this season.
Chris Geronimo closed out the
scoring with an RBI single to center field with two outs in the ninth. He led
the Privateers at the dish with a 4-for-5 afternoon, while four others finished
with two hits. Tyler Sanders (0-1) was charged with the loss for UNO after
allowing five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits over five innings.
The Warhawks wrap up play at
the NSU Invitational Sunday afternoon against host Northwestern State. First
pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. from
Brown-Stroud Field.
