LAFAYETTE, La. --
La.-Lafayette scored six runs over the first two innings en route to an 11-0
victory in seven innings over ULM Sunday afternoon at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field
to salvage one game in the three-game Sun Belt Conference series.
The Cajuns (9-10, 1-2 Sun
Belt) chased ULM starter Brent Gay after just 1.1 innings of work as they put
three runs on the board in both the first and second innings. An error
prolonged the first inning and led to a pair of unearned runs, while ULL put
together three hits around a lead-off walk in the second.
The loss was just the second
in the past 12 games for the Warhawks (12-6, 2-1) and snapped a six-game win
streak.
T.J. Geith (1-2) went the
distance for the Cajuns on the mound. The southpaw allowed just two hits and
struck out six to pick up the win.
ULL added five more runs on
eight hits in the fourth inning to extend its lead out to 11-0 and put itself
in position to end the game early due to the Sunday run-rule in the Sun Belt
Conference.
Jordan Poirrier, Alex Fuselier
and Chris Sinclair all had three hits to lead ULL at the dish, while two others
had a pair of hits. Caleb Clowers and Les Aulds had ULM's base hits.
Gay (1-1) was charged with
five runs -- three earned -- on four hits as he suffered the loss in his first
career start as a Warhawk.
The Warhawks play host to
Southern Miss and Northwestern State on Tuesday and Wednesday at Warhawk Field;
first pitch for both games is 6 p.m.
