ULM Drops Series Finale at South Alabama 8-3

Baseball
MOBILE, Ala. -- South Alabama scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to answer a ULM three-spot in the top of the frame to win the rubber game of the three-game Sun Belt Conference set 8-3 Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field.

South Alabama starting pitcher Brad Hook helped out his own cause with a leadoff homer to right-center field to break a 3-all tie. Following a walk, the next two Jaguar batters were retired by ULM closer James Jones.

However, an error by the Warhawks kept the inning alive and following an intentional walk to USA's leading hitter Jake Overstreet, Brent Tanner lined a single into right field to plate two runs. The Jaguars (13-10, 3-3 Sun Belt) tacked on a pair of insurance runs with two outs in the eighth.

The Warhawks (14-9, 3-3) tied the game with three hits in the seventh after entering the frame with just a bunt single on the afternoon. Joey Rapp reached on a one-out single and Kelvin York drew a walk to put a pair of runners on. Following a fly out, Judd Edwards and Shane Ardoin delivered back-to-back doubles.

Overstreet drove in the first two runs of the game for the Jaguars with a groundout in the first and a single in the third. Nolan Earley drove home Overstreet following his single in the third to give the Jaguars a 3-0 lead.

Hook, who finished 1-for-3 at the plate, picked up the win on the mound for South Alabama. Hook (1-2) tossed a complete game allowing five hits and three runs; he struck out six and walked three.

Jason Hicks led the Warhawks with a pair of hits, while Taylor White led the Jaguars with a 4-for-5 afternoon.

Luke Briley (2-1) was charged with his first loss of the season after allowing five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits over six innings of work.

The Warhawks travel to Jackson State on Tuesday night before finally opening the home portion of their Sun Belt Conference schedule next weekend. After six straight road games to open league play, ULM will host FIU (15-11, 2-4).
