DENTON, Texas - A one-run seventh inning rally wasn't enough
to extend the game for the ULM softball team Sunday afternoon in a 2-1 loss to Sun
Belt Conference foe North Texas at Lovelace Stadium. The Warhawks drop the
series to the Mean Green with the loss and are now 24-19 overall, 10-8 SBC.
With North Texas up 2-0 with two outs in the top of the
seventh Melissa Rivera and Elise West strung together back-to-back singles to
become just the third and fourth base runners for the game for ULM. Samantha
Riojas belted a double to plate Rivera and prevent the shutout but West was
caught going home to end the game with a 2-1 loss.
Rivera was the only Warhawk with multiple hits and scored
the lone run while Riojas collected one RBI and one double in a 1-for-2 performance.
Roxy Cassel had an impressive defensive game at catcher as she gunned down a
career-high four runners caught stealing.
Tiffany Mills pushed her record to 12-12 with the loss after
six innings in the circle in which she allowed two earned runs on seven hits
with three strikeouts.
North Texas (19-25, 5-13 SBC) used a pair of back-to-back
doubles by Courtney Bradshaw and Lesley Hirsch to score the game's first run in
the second inning. ULM held it hitless for two innings until Megan Rupp reached
on a double and scored the game-winning run with a single by Mariza Martinez.
Rupp and Hirsch each had a pair of hits for the Mean Green
while Martinez and Hirsch had one RBI each. Bradshaw, Hirsch, Rupp and Brooke
Foster also had a double. Brittany Simmons (10-11) went the distance in the circle
to earn the win after allowing just one earned run on five hits with five
strikeouts.
ULM returns home for a mid-week game Tuesday at 4 p.m. to
complete the home-and-home series with in-state opponent Grambling State.
