MONROE, La. -- ULM used an
eight-run third inning to power past Mississippi Valley State 11-7 Tuesday night
in non-conference action at Warhawk Field.
The Warhawks (18-17) sent 11
batters to the plate in the inning as they belted out three hits and took advantage
of four walks and a hit batter. Jarrett Hammond and Taylor Abdalla drew
back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to put the Warhawks on the board.
Judd Edwards drove home a run
with an infield single and a throwing error by the Delta Devils on what would
have been the third out allowed two more runs to score. Jeremy Sy made them pay
for the error with a towering 3-run home run to left field one batter later. It
was his third homer of the season and second in less than a week.
Les Aulds led the Warhawks at
the plate as he finished the night 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Clowers
scored twice and was 2-for-4 while Hammond drove in a pair. The Warhawks have
now surpassed their win total from a season ago.
The Delta Devils (14-24)
jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first and one in the second
before Warhawk starter Shelby Aulds settled in. Aulds (1-1) went eight innings
to pick up the win. He struck out six and walked one in his first career start.
ULM tacked on another run in
the fourth when Hammond lined a double into left-center field to score Rapp
after he drew one of his three walks on the night. Back-to-back doubles by Les Aulds
and Clowers in the eighth accounted for the 10th run of the night
and Jason Hicks added a pinch hit sacrifice fly later in the inning for the
final run.
Mississippi Valley State
scored a pair in the ninth on a double by Scott Hornstra. He finished the game
3-for-5 as the Delta Devils out-hit ULM 13-9. Jordy Poche made his first
appearance of the season on the mound for the Warhawks in the inning.
Steven Barnes (4-5) took the
loss for the Delta Devils after he allowed six runs -- three earned -- on two
hits in 2.1 innings of work. His vice was the five walks he issued and the two
hit batters. MVSU used six different pitchers in the game.
The teams will meet again
Wednesday night at Warhawk Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
