Louisiana-Lafayette Takes Series From ULM with 11-1 Victory

Baseball
MONROE, La. -- Mike Petello hit two home runs and Louisiana-Lafayette jumped out to an eight-run lead en route to an 11-1 victory over ULM Friday night at Warhawk Field.

Petello hit two-run home runs in the third and fifth innings and finished the game 4-for-5 with five RBIs. ULL (31-23, 18-11 Sun Belt) scored two runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings to jump out to an 8-0 lead and Ryland Parker held ULM (23-30, 8-21) without a hit over the first five innings.

Joey Rapp broke up Parker's no-hit bid with a sharp single to left field to lead off the sixth and would later come home to score ULM's only run of the game. Clowers followed Rapp's single with one of his own through the right-side of the infield. Judd Edwards moved the runners up a base with a grounder to first and Jason Hicks singled home Rapp with a line drive to left.

Jordan Poirrier put the Cajuns on the board with a two-out double to left center in the first and Lance Marvel followed with a single between first and second for the second run of the inning. Michael Strentz added a two-run single in the fifth and Poirrier hit his eighth home run of the season in the eighth.

Poirrier finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored while Marvel and Matt Goulas added three hits. ULL out-hit ULM 19-3 on the night; all three of ULM's hits came in the sixth inning.

Parker (2-1) exited the game after allowing the single to Rapp as he control started to fade. He walked five batters over his five innings of his work, including four over his final two innings on the mound in the winning effort.

Randy Zeigler (5-5) was charged with the loss for ULM after he allowed eight runs on 12 hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out six and walked two before turning the ball over to Brent Gay.

The Warhawks will try and salvage a game in the series Saturday at 6 p.m. in the season finale. ULM will honor its eight seniors in a ceremony prior to the game.
