MONROE, La. - The ULM soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision to
Northwestern State in its home opener Tuesday at the ULM Soccer Complex. It
concludes a stretch of three matches in five days for the Warhawks, who dropped
to 1-1-1 on the season.
Northwestern State (1-1-0) pulled out to a 2-0 lead in the first 10
minutes of the match and never trailed. The Warhawks came within one goal on
two occasions and had opportunities to tie the match in both halves.
Freshman Taylor Bonetti struck for a goal in the 14th minute off a nice
feed from freshman Alyssa Wooden as the Warhawks cut the score to 2-1. With the
assist, Wooden leads the Warhawks with five points through the first three
matches.
The Lady Demons struck for a 3-1 lead in the 71st minute on a goal from
Hailey Altenburg, who received a dish from Chelsea Schaefer in the right side
of the box and scored.
Sophomore Taylor Epperson scored on a header in the 72nd minute off a
free kick from Brittany Parker to cut the Northwestern State lead to 3-2 with
just under 19 minutes to play in the match. Epperson's header got past the
goalkeeper and sneaked into the right side of the goal for her first score of
the season.
Northwestern State answered in the 80th minute with a goal
from Theresa Halle - who drilled her shot over the head of ULM goalkeeper
Hannah Linzay from 30 yards out - to make the score 4-2.
The Lady Demons outshout ULM 18-10 in the match and had a 10-8
advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Linzay recorded six saves for
the Warhawks.
The Warhawks have four days off before hosting Southern University
Sunday at 1 p.m. at the ULM Soccer Complex.
