HAMMOND, La. - The ULM volleyball team fell in a hard-fought
match to Southeastern Louisiana by a 3-1 result (14-25, 25-21, 21-25, 17-25) Tuesday evening in the University Center in Hammond, La.
Junior Zuzana Markova notched her third triple-double this
season with a team-high 19 assists, 10 kills and 10 digs while collecting three
service aces. Sophomore Blanca Ocana also hit double-digits in kills with 10
and senior Meghan McCoy had 11 assists. Freshman Marcela Urbina had an
excellent performance with a career-best 17 digs to lead ULM (4-3) while Tetitana
Sukach also had a career-high 14 digs.
Four Lady Lions reached double-figures in kills as Elizabeth
Ramee led with 13 and Paige Dollison and Kinsey Williams had 12 each. Lindsey
Young had a match-high 37 assists while another four Southeastern Louisiana
players had double-digits in digs led by Megan McMillin and Taylor Buckner with
24 and 15, respectively.
Southeastern Louisiana (4-9) scored five-consecutive points
to take a commanding 10-4 lead in the first set after a nearly even start for
both teams. The Lady Lions continued to
extend their lead with a 12-7 run that included two separate runs of three-straight
points to extend their advantage 22-11. ULM scored twice more before three more
points ended the first set in favor of Southeastern Louisiana 25-14.
The momentum of the Lady Lions' start carried into the
second set as they grabbed a quick 6-1 lead.
However, the Warhawks responded with a huge 13-4 run which included a
dominant eight-point streak to swing the advantage in their favor 14-10. Southeastern
Louisiana slowly worked its way back into a tie 19-19 with a 9-4 run and two
more ties ensued until ULM used a Markova kill, Ocana service ace and two SELU errors
to win the second set 25-21.
Neither team was able to go ahead more than one point for
much of the third set until Southeastern Louisiana used a block, service ace
and ULM attack error to take a 14-10 lead. The deficit held until the Warhawks
used an attack error and back-to-back kills by Samantha Morse to come within
one point 22-21. Two Warhawk miscues and a final kill ended the set in favor of
the Lady Lions 25-21.
ULM suffered from multiple miscues in the beginning of the
fourth set to fall behind early 9-3, and the Lady Lions used another
three-consecutive points to extend their lead 12-3. The Warhawks strung
together two Morse kills and back-to-back service aces during a 14-10 run to
make the score 22-17 before Southeastern Louisiana put away the final set and
match with two errors and two kills 25-17.
ULM plays its final three non-conference matches of the
season this weekend at the 2011 Nicholls Bayou Invitational when it faces Grambling
State for the second time in less than two weeks as well as Alabama A&M and
host Nicholls State.
