MOBILE, Ala. - The ULM soccer team came up short Sunday afternoon in a
2-1 overtime loss to South Alabama in Sun Belt action at the The Cage. The
Warhawks (5-5-1, 0-2 SBC) built a 1-0 lead midway through the second half, but
the Lady Jaguars rallied for the victory.
South Alabama (9-1-1, 2-0 SBC) notched the game-winning goal from
Shelby Owen off a corner kick in the eighth minute of the first overtime. It
marked the third overtime match of the season for the Warhawks, who moved to
1-1-1 in those matches.
After a scoreless first half for both teams, ULM freshman Taylor
Bonetti opened the scoring in the 62nd minute with a shot off the crossbar that
found its way into the net. The goal was Bonetti's fifth of the season, tying
her for team lead with fellow freshman Alyssa Wooden.
The Warhawks' lead didn't last long as South Alabama's Clarissa
Hernandez scored 20 seconds later on a penalty kick to tie the score at 1-all.
ULM recorded eight shots in the match and held an 8-6 advantage in
corner kicks.
Junior Alex Holland made her third start of the season in goal for the
Warhawks and held South Alabama scoreless in 55:41 of action. Sophomore Hannah
Linzay came in and gave up both goals to take the loss. The two combined to
record nine saves in the match.
The Warhawks head
home to host North Texas Friday (Sept. 30) at 4 p.m., and Denver Sunday (Oct.
2) at 12 p.m.
