UALR Uses Strong Second half to Defeat ULM

MONROE, La. - Courtney Jackson scored a game-high 20 points and UALR used a strong defensive performance to defeat ULM 72-51 Thursday evening inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

The Trojans limited ULM to just 36.2 percent shooting, including 24.1 percent in the second half, to pull away and move to 4-0 in Sun Belt play. Jackson went 8 of 13 from the field to lead the way with 20 points, while D'Andre Williams and Chuck Guy each contributed 10 points for the Trojans.

ULM finished with four players in double figures, led by 15 points and seven rebounds from sophomore Steven McClellan. McClellan finished 6 of 12 from the field while also adding two assists, a block and a steal. Senior Fred Brown chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore Charles Winborne and senior Christian Bibi Ndongo added 10 points each.

UALR never trailed but had to sweat it out before using a 9-2 run to build a 45-35 advantage with 15:15 remaining in the game. The Trojans put the game away with a 10-2 spurt, capped by a layup from Reggie Fondren, to take a 60-43 lead with 7:12 remaining.

The Trojans finished with a 36-30 advantage on the boards and an 18-9 lead in points off turnovers.

UALR got off to hot a shooting start and built an early 20-6 lead with 12:17 remaining in the first half. The Trojans led by double figures for most of the half before ULM closed on a 13-4 run and trailed 38-33 at halftime.

Winborne and Mingo capped the run at the end of the half with 3-pointers and the Warhawks made a defensive stand at the buzzer to trail by five at the break.

A pair of free throws by McClellan on the first possession of the second half pulled the Warhawks within 38-35 before UALR pulled away.

ULM hosts conference foe North Texas Saturday at 1 p.m. inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
