MONROE, La. - Denver rolled to a 63-48 victory over ULM Thursday in Sun
Belt action inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
The Pioneers (15-4, 5-1 SBC) shot 50 percent from the field while
holding the Warhawks to 36.5 percent from the field. Denver entered the night
ranked No. 2 in the Sun Belt in scoring defense, allowing just 60.7 points per
game.
Sophomore guard Charles Winborne led the Warhawks with 18 points and
five rebounds. It marked the fourth straight game that Winborne has reached
double figures in scoring. He has led the Warhawks in scoring in two straight
contests.
ULM (2-18, 1-6 SBC) got as close as 11 at 57-46 with 4:33 to play
before Denver scored four straight points to put the game away. Brian Stafford,
the Sun Belt's leading scorer, finished with a team-high 17 points to lead the
Pioneers. Chris Udofia chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds and Royce O'Neale
added 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists for Denver.
Leading 11-9 early, the Pioneers held the Warhawks scoreless for just
under eight minutes, embarking on a 12-0 run, to build a 23-9 advantage. A
3-pointer by Winborne ended the ULM drought at the 6:33 mark of the half.
Denver held ULM to just 29.2 percent shooting in the first half and
held a 36-18 lead at the break.
Winborne scored 13 points in the second half, including eight straight to
open the half. His 3-pointer with 17:11 remaining cut the Denver lead to 38-26.
After a layup from Stafford, freshman forward Trey Lindsey knocked home a
3-pointer to get the Warhawks within 11 at 40-29 with 16:12 to play.
Denver answered with an 11-3 spurt, capped by a 3-pointer from O'Neale
with 11:15 remaining, to stretch its lead to 51-35.
The Warhawks travel to Troy to face the Trojans Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
