MONROE, La. - Senior guard Fred Brown recorded a season-high 24 points,
but it was not enough as UL-Lafayette defeated ULM 67-60 Saturday inside
Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Brown finished 8 of 17 from the field and tied his season high with six
assists on the night. It marked his 14th double-digit scoring effort and his third
20-point game of the season.
ULM rallied from a 14-point deficit midway through the second half to
pull within four on two occasions in the final minutes. Sophomore guard Charles
Winborne hit a 3-pointer with 1:05 remaining to get the Warhawks within 61-57.
The Ragin' Cajuns (12-11, 6-3 SBC) responded on their next possession
with a layup from Raymone Andrews with 54 seconds remaining. UL-Lafayette put
the game away with four free throws down the stretch.
Josh Brown led the Ragin' Cajuns with 14 points and seven rebounds,
while Darshawn McClellan added 13 points and Elfrid Payton chipped in 10 points
for UL-Lafayette, who won for the third straight time in the series.
The Ragin' Cajuns broke the game open midway through the second half
with a 13-0 run - spanning just over three minutes - to build its largest lead
of the game at 49-35 with 10:11 remaining.
The Warhawks (2-20, 1-8 SBC) responded with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a
3-pointer from freshman Trent Mackey, to cut the Ragin' Cajun lead to 57-53
with 3:41 to play.
Winborne finished with 18 points, including three 3-pointers and Mackey
chipped in 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc for the Warhawks. ULM
shot 40.4 percent from the field and finished 9 of 18 from 3-point range.
The Warhawks travel to Jonesboro, Ark., to take on Arkansas State Thursday
at 8 p.m. inside the Convocation Center. The meeting between the Warhawks and
Red Wolves will be televised by CSS as the Sun Belt's game of the week.
