MONROE, La. - With just five regular season
matches remaining, the ULM soccer team looks to get back on track in Florida
this weekend. The Warhawks travel to Florida Atlantic on Friday at 6 p.m. CT
and conclude the weekend at FIU on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
ULM was
tied at the half in both of its matches last weekend, but finished with a 0-2
record at home against Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky. Freshmen Karlea Fehr and Mariah Mitchell each had goals on the weekend.
Fehr's
goal, which came in the 58th minute against Middle Tennessee on Friday, was her
team-leading fifth on the season. Fehr ranks just outside the top 10 in the Sun
Belt in goals scored and points (15). She
is tied for seventh place in the conference with five assists this season. Mitchell
scored her first career goal Sunday in the 16th minute against Western
Kentucky. The Corona, Calif., native ranks third on the team with five points
this season.
ULM has
now scored a goal in three straight matches and seven of its last eight. The
Warhawks combined to score just five goals in Sun Belt play the past two
seasons, but already have four in conference play this season. As a team, ULM
is tied for ninth place in the Sun Belt in goals scored (14) and alone in ninth
place in points (48).
Florida
Atlantic enters the weekend with a 1-4 record in Sun Belt play with its only
conference victory coming in a 2-0 decision over Troy on Sept. 21. The Owls
have been competitive over the past weeks though, dropping one-goal decisions
to North Texas (2-1), Middle Tennessee (3-2, 2OT) and Western Kentucky (1-0,
OT). Claire Emslie leads the Owls
with eight goals this season.
ULM is
1-5 all-time against Florida Atlantic, including a close 2-1 loss to the Owls
last season in Boca Raton. The Warhawks lone win in the series came back in
2007, a 1-0 victory over the Owls on the road.
FIU has
played one of the most difficult schedules of any team in the Sun Belt and
enters the weekend with a record of 6-5-2 overall, 3-1-1 in conference play.
FIU and North Texas played to a 1-1 tie in the Panther's only match this past
weekend. Chelsea Leiva leads FIU with
six goals and four assists for 16 points this season.
The
Warhawks have never defeated FIU in six meetings. The closest ULM came to
knocking off FIU was in 2007, when the two teams played to a scoreless tie in
Miami. FIU knocked off ULM 3-0 last season in Miami.
ULM
returns home for the final time this season against South Alabama (Oct. 18) and
Troy (Oct. 21).
