THIBODAUX, La. -- Nicholls
State (3-1) never trailed and led by as many as 30 against ULM (0-3) on Friday night inside Stopher Gym on its way to
an 85-60 win.
Ashleigh Simmons finished with a double-double highlighted by
career-highs in points (22) to lead all scorers and rebounds (12). Five
Colonels finished in double-figures led by LiAnn McCarthy with 17 points.
Nicholls State jumped out to a 10-2 lead after four minutes
of action. The Colonels remained the aggressor and led 16-6 with 11:26 left in
the half.
The deficit reached 15, at 22-7, with a bucket from Jasmine
Scott at the eight-minute mark. Jenny Nash gave the Colonels a 40-22 lead with
a three-pointer with under a minute to play before the break.
At halftime, Nicholls State led 42-24 behind 10 points from
Nash and 21 bench points. Christina Gray led ULM with eight points.
Simmons converted a three-point play to bring the score to
49-33 with 16:40 to play. However, the Colonels led 55-33 with 13:33 left in
the game as the Warhawks were unable to find any good looks with NSU's solid
defense. Nicholls State would clear its bench and cruise to its third
victory if the season. The Colonels would finish with 42 points from its bench.
The team will return home for a Wednesday clash with another
Southland Conference member, Lamar. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
