MONROE, La. -- ULM
(0-4) was unable to hold onto an early first half lead and fell to Lamar (4-1),
72-50, on Wednesday afternoon.
Alayshia Hunter led the way with 13 points and six rebounds.
Ashleigh Simmons pulled down nine rebounds. Kalis Loyd paced Lamar with 21
points, nine steals, seven steals and four rebounds.
After three minutes of scoreless basketball, Hunter
connected on back-to-back baskets to give ULM a 4-0 lead, forcing the Lady
Cardinals to burn a timeout. Hunter continued her hot start with another layup,
giving the Warhawks a 6-0 lead with 15:22 left in the half.
Halfway through the first half, ULM led 13-6, as Lamar
struggled with turnovers and making just one of its first 17 field goal
attempts.
Taylor Hays hit two three-pointers to give Lamar its first
lead, 18-17, with 6:20 left before halftime.
Loyd began to take over the game with her defense leading to
six straight points giving the Lady Cardinals a 25-19 advantage with 4:22 left
on the clock.
At halftime, Lamar had extended its lead to 38-24. Hunter
led the way with 11 points while Loyd led the Lady Cards with 12 points and
seven steals. ULM committed 20 turnovers leading to 30 points for the Lady
Cards.
Lamar led 45-32 after four minutes into the second half. ULM
cut the deficit to 10 with 11:51 left in the game but were unable to bring it
to single-digits.
The Lady Cardinals would cruise to its fourth straight win
by a final score of 72-50.
The Warhawks will have one final tune-up at Tennessee Tech
on Saturday at 7 p.m. before Sun Belt play begins.
