MONROE, La. -- ULM
defeated Louisiana College Monday
night, 110-96, inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Four Warhawks finished in double-figures led by 24 from
Ashleigh Simmons. Jasmine Shaw finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and
seven assists. Also in double-figures were Alayshia Hunter (18) and Jae Shin
(15).
The Warhawks started out with 9-5 lead as ULM's press caused
three consecutive turnovers near the 17-minute mark. Jenna Lee accounted for
four early points.
Khloe Mims knocked down a jump shot to bring the Lady
Wildcats within one, 17-16, with 12:32 left before halftime.
Shaw hit a baseline jumper to stretch the home lead
before cleaning up a loose ball underneath the basket to give ULM a 21-17 lead
with just over 11 minute left in the half.
Louisiana College took the lead on two Skylar Chenevert free
throws before Simmons converted a three-point play to give ULM a 26-25
lead with 9:12 remaining in the first stanza.
The Lady Wildcats took advantage of two Warhawk turnovers to
convert easy layups, giving LC a 31-30 lead at the seven-minute mark. Natosha
Gottlieb hit a triple to extend LC's lead to 39-34 with 4:43 left before the
break.
At the break, Louisiana College led 49-47, powered by 10
points from Neka Jones. Ten of 13 players on LC's roster scored in the first
half. ULM was paced by 17 points from Simmons.
Mims hit a three-point to give LC a 54-51 advantage two
minutes into the second half.
Shaw went coast-to-coast for a fast break layup to give ULM
a 55-54 lead and followed with a three-point play stretching the lead to 58-55 with
16:36 left in the game.
The Warhawks began to take control and led 72-65 on a Tyler
Holley bucket. With nine minutes left, ULM held onto a 78-71 lead.
The Lady Wildcats pulled within three at the six-minute mark
after two fast break layups, the second from Jones. LaToya Jones hit a triple
to tie the game at 88-88 at the five-minute mark.
ULM pulled away towards the end of the contest powered by
better ball control. Shin found Alayshia hunter down the middle of the
paint to give the Warhawks a 100-92 lead with 2:33 left.
The game ended with ULM winning 110-96, marking the first
time since Dec. 13, 1997 against Grambling State (101-75).
The women's basketball team officially begins on
Nov. 9 (Friday) at Stephen F. Austin. The Ladyjacks handed the Warhawks a 68-58
season-opening loss last season.
