Warhawks Pick Up 10-0 Run-Rule Win Over Northwestern State

Softball

MONROE, La. -  The ULM softball team came out on fire on the second day of the ULM Mardi Gras Classic Saturday against Northwestern State by racking up six runs in the top of the first on the way to a 10-0 six inning run-rule victory.

Three different Warhawks notched at least two hits for the game, led by Janel Salanoa who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Alexis Cacioppo had a 2-for-4 performance which included two runs, two RBIs and two doubles while Karli Wainwright also notched two doubles to go 2-for-5.

Samantha Hamby (2-0) pitched a complete game shutout in her first start of the season, allowing just two hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

ULM (2-1) maintained a comfortable six run lead through a scoreless four innings even though it had multiple opportunities to score again, leaving 10 runners stranded on base while the Demons (0-2) left seven. The Warhawks had 11 hits total.

Caccioppo, Roxy Cassel and Salanoa led off the sixth inning with three straight singles through the left side to quickly load the bases with no outs. Another single by Miyuki Navarrete scored Cacioppo and a sacrifice line-out by Haley McCall allowed pinch runner Charlotte Pastor to tag up. A final double by Mackenzie Miller scored two RBIs to cap the scoring spree, and the defense secured the run-rule victory with three final outs.

Wainwright and Kayla Boening each reached base to start the game and executed a double steal to put both in scoring position before Cacioppo's double to left center cleared the bases. ULM scored two more runs when Salanoa tripled to the right field wall following a Cassel walk, and a McCall single put the last scoring run on base before the inning ended with the Warhawks leading 6-0.

Brittany Virgoess and Cali Burke were the lone Demons to secure a hit. Kylie Roos (0-2) picked up her second loss of the season after starting in the circle and allowing five earned runs, three hits and one walk.

ULM hits the field again this afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m. when it squares off with Southeast Missouri State to close out the second day of the Mardi Gras Classic.
