MONROE, La. - A late surge in the bottom the seventh inning came too late as the ULM softball team dropped its nightcap against Southeast Missouri State 8-4 on the second day of the ULM Mardi Gras Classic.

Karli Wainwright was the only Warhawk to collect multiple hits in a 2-for-4 performance with a team-high two runs and three stolen bases. Miyuki Navarrete went 1-for-3 with a run and two stolen bases while Janel Salanoa also stole two bags. Routzon (0-1) was credited the loss in the circle after three earned runs on seven hits and five strikeouts in 3.2 innings tossed.

With ULM (2-2) trailing 8-1 in the top of the seventh, Navarrete singled and stole second to get in scoring position followed by a Haylie Wilson double to left field for an RBI. Wainwright singled to the shortstop and stole second to put herself and pinch runner Elena DiMattia on second and third before a passed ball and throwing error allowed both to go home. Kayla Boening walked but was caught stealing to end the late surge and the game.

Wainwright put the first run on the board in the first inning when a passed ball allowed her to score from third after a base hit and moving over on two sacrifice bunts. Southeast Missouri responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning when two singles and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with one out and Lindsey Patterson hit a double to the left field wall to clear the bases.

Southeast Missouri (3-2) added a single run in the second inning before a big four-run fourth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded a fielding error allowed Taylor Cowan to reach and Leah Becker and Simone Patterson to score. Two more deep singles up the middle brought in two more runners before Katy McAcllister struck out to end the inning.

Evan Sallis went 1-for2 for the Redhawks and Cowan went 1-for-4, each scoring a team-high two runs. Cheyenne Gipson and Renee Kertz also scored one run apiece and Lindsey Patterson had four RBI. Shea Cothern (1-1) allowed two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in a complete game performance to earn her first win this season.

The Warhawks wrap up the 2012 Mardi Gras Classic tomorrow afternoon when they play Grambling State at 1 p.m.
