HOUSTON - The ULM softball team fell in a close pitcher's
duel to McNeese State Sunday morning in the second day of the Houston Hilton
Plaza Invitational at the Cougar Softball Stadium. Both teams managed a
combined six hits and 19 strikeouts for the game.
Karli Wainwright and Mackenzie Miller were the lone Warhawks
(4-4) to secure a hit, each in 1-for-3 performances. Samantha Hamby (2-2) started
in the circle and picked up the loss after tossing 2.0 innings, allowing just
one hit and one earned run with three strikeouts. Haylie Wilson relieved Hamby
for the final five innings, throwing three hits and four strikeouts with one
earned run.
Kim Kennedy helped push the Cowgirls' lead out to 2-0 in the
fifth after two scoreless innings. MyKeisha Young entered as a pinch runner and
advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt when Kennedy singled to center field and
drove Young home, scoring on a close play at home plate.
McNeese State's (6-4) first run came in the second inning
with a leadoff solo home run by Alanna DiVittorio. One more Cowgirl reached
base with a walk, but a sacrifice bunt and two strikeouts ended the top of the
inning.
Meagan Bong threw the complete game for McNeese State and
gave up just two hits and no walks with an impressive 12 strikeouts. Divittorio
was the only Cowgirl to collect multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with one run and
one RBI.
The Warhawks face No. 17 Houston in their final game of the
Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational at approximately 1:25 p.m.
