JONESBORO, Ark. - ULM battled back from a 19-point deficit in the
second half, but it was not enough as Arkansas State held on for a 72-64
victory over the Warhawks Thursday evening inside the Convocation Center.
With its starters on the bench, ULM used a 19-3 run to pull within
three points midway through the second half, but Arkansas State shot lights out
down the stretch to put the game away. The Red Wolves (10-14, 4-6 SBC) finished
the game at 46.9 percent from the field, while the Warhawks shot 37.9 percent.
Sophomore guard came off the bench to tie a career high with 15 points
and senior center Fabio Ribeiro chipped in a season-high 13 points to lead the
way for the Warhawks. ULM had a balanced scoring attack as eight different
players scored at least five points.
Hansberry scored on a putback layup with 7:16 remaining to cap the19-3
spurt and pull the Warhawks within 52-49. The Red Wolves answered with eight
straight points from Adam Sterrenberg, including a pair of 3-pointers, to push
its lead back to double figures at 60-50 with 5:08 to play.
Sterrenberg and Ed Townsel each scored 18 points to lead the Red
Wolves, while Rakeem Dickerson chipped in 12 points and Marcus Hooten added 10
points.
ULM (2-21, 1-9 SBC) missed six free throws down the stretch and went
just 16 of 25 from the charity stripe in the game. After a slow start, Arkansas
State made its final 10 free-throw attempts to seal the victory.
The Warhawks held a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint and a
commanding 46-23 edge in bench points.
Arkansas State made six 3-pointers in the first half and led 34-22 at
the break.
The Warhawks return to action Saturday at UALR with the game set to tip
off at 7 p.m.
