LITTLE ROCK - UALR held off a late rally from ULM for a 70-66 victory
over the Warhawks Saturday inside the Jack Stephens Center. The Trojans led
67-60 with 24 seconds remaining before ULM made it interesting at the end,
getting within two in the final seconds.
ULM (2-22, 1-10 SBC) shot 41.5 percent from the field while limiting
UALR (11-13, 8-2 SBC) to 34 percent for the game. The difference in the game
came at the free-throw line where the Trojans held a 32-15 advantage.
Sophomore guard Marcelis Hansberry netted a career-high 22 points on
7-of-11 shooting from the field in 32 minutes of action for ULM. Senior guard
Hugh Mingo chipped in 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and
sophomore center Steven McClellan finished just shy of a double-double with
eight points and 10 rebounds.
Trailing 67-60, ULM got back-to-back 3-pointers from Hansberry and
senior guard Fred Brown to slice the deficit to 68-66 with 4.9 seconds
remaining. UALR's D'Andre Williams got fouled and knocked home both free throws
to seal the victory.
Williams finished with 21 points, including an 11-of-12 effort from the
free-throw line. Overall, the Trojans made 32 of 46 attempts from the charity
stripe.
Mingo scored 10 points as part of a 12-5 run for the Warhawks as they
sliced an 11-point defecit to 64-60 with 1:49 remaining. ULM had a chance to
cut the lead to two points on its next possession, but McClellan missed the
front end of a one-and-one. Williams made a pair of free throws on the other
end for UALR to build its lead back to six.
The Trojans led for the final 38 minutes of the game and led by as many
as 11 in the second half. ULM trailed 33-28 at the break.
The Warhawks have a week off before hosting South Alabama Saturday
(Feb. 11) at 2 p.m. inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
