McCall's Bomb Lifts ULM over Troy 5-3 to Win Series

Softball

MONROE, La. - Haley McCall nailed a three-run bomb on two outs in the sixth inning to lead the ULM softball team to a 5-3 come-from-behind victory against Troy Thursday evening at the ULM Softball Complex. The Warhawks take the Sun Belt Conference series against the Trojans for the second-straight season, with both series wins coming after dropping the first contest.

The native of Grand Chenier, La., tied a season-high four RBIs and scored one run in the game's only multi-hit performance going 2-for-3. Four other Warhawks provided a run, with Alexis Cacioppo and Roxy Cassel each going 1-for-2.

Haylie Wilson capped a strong showing by ULM's pitching staff for the series, allowing a career-low two hits in a complete-game performance with two earned runs and two strikeouts. Not one Trojan managed multiple hits in a single game the entire series.

McCall came up huge with her first home run since coming to ULM and her second extra-base shot of the day, clearing the bases after Cassel got on with a RBI single and Salanoa walked. Cacciopo led off the inning with a single to begin the four-run scoring spree.

ULM (14-11, 2-4 Sun Belt) cut into the Trojans' 2-0 lead in the fifth inning as Pastor and McCall put together the Warhawks' first two hits. Pastor hit an infield single and McCall followed with a double that fell just feet short of clearing the outfield wall to send her home.

Troy (18-7, 1-2 Sun Belt) scored the game's first two runs in the second inning, loading the bases with a single by Hayden Gann and two walks. A sacrifice fly by Ashley Rainey plated Gann, and a fielding error allowed an unearned run to go home.

Gann pushed Troy's lead out to 3-1 in the next inning, getting on base with a walk and coming around to score off a deep single by Taylor Smartt to right center.

Troy was led by Gann for the contest as she scored two of its three runs with a 1-for-2 effort. Ashley Rainey (8-3) picked up her third loss of the season after allowing three earned runs on four hits, fanning four batters.

ULM takes off for the rest of the week and returns to the ULM Softball Complex Tuesday for a doubleheader against Grambling State beginning at 5 p.m.
