CONWAY, Ark. - The ULM softball team managed just two hits
and left four runners stranded to drop a 5-0 decision to Central Arkansas Wednesday
at Ferris Field.
Haley McCall and Elena DiMattia were the only Warhawks to collect
a hit for the contest, each going 1-for-3 with McCall's being a double. Miyuki
Navarrete snagged her Sun Belt Conference-leading 18th stolen base
of the season.
Haylie Wilson gave up five earned runs off of eight hits and
struck out two batters in the complete game effort to fall to 9-3 on the year.
The Sugar Bears (29-17) loaded the bases on two outs after a
scoreless inning and a half and used a double by Nicole Beals that glanced off
Kayla Boening's glove to take a 2-0 lead. Lissa Avitia followed with another
double to the right field wall to plate two more and take an early four run
advantage.
Another run scored in the sixth inning when Central Arkansas
strung together a double and two singles, which put runners on the corners. ULM
(16-17) had a clutch out at home plate when the Sugar Bears attempted to pull
off a double steal and tagged Kelvon Greer sliding in to escape the inning with
minimal damage.
McCall got into scoring position with a double in the first
inning, and back-to-back walks by Roxy Cassel and Katie Girardi loaded the
bases to threaten out of the gate. A strikeout ended the inning to leave all
three Warhawks stranded.
Beals had a strong 2-for-4 performance with one run and
three RBIs to lead the Sugar Bears at the plate. Katie McGregor went 1-for-2
with two runs. Kelsie Armstong picked up the complete game shutout in a two-hit
outing and tossed seven strikeouts.
ULM returns to action tomorrow evening with a single contest
in Memphis, Tenn., against Memphis at 6 p.m.
