BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - ULM senior Jeremy Sy was
named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year Tuesday during the 2012 Sun Belt
Conference Baseball Championship Family Night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Sy became the seventh player in program
history to earn postseason conference player of the year honors, and the first
since the Warhawks joined the Sun Belt prior to the 2007 season.
A native of Mount Zion, Ill., Sy led all Sun
Belt players with a .388 batting average in conference play, and tied Middle
Tennessee's Justin Guidry for the most hits (47) and UALR's Cameron Bentley for
the most doubles (11) in Sun Belt action.
The 6-1 shortstop paced the league in runs scored (34), total bases
(73), walks (24), slugging percentage (.603), on-base percentage (.493) and
assists (102) in 30 conference starts.
Sy also joined Dexter Fontenot (2008), Ben
Soignier (2008 and 2009) and fellow senior Joey Rapp (2011) as the fifth ULM
all-conference first team selection in the school's Sun Belt era.
Arkansas State's Jacob Lee was named the
conference Pitcher of the Year, and Middle Tennessee's Johnathan Frebis was
tabbed as the Freshman of the Year.
Tommy Raffo from Arkansas State received the Ron Maestri Coach of the
Year award.
Rapp and junior Randy Zeigler were two of the
14 players named to the All-Sun Belt second team. The last time three or more Warhawks received
all-conference honors prior to this season was 2009 (Soignier-first team, Boomer
Blanchard and Jon Prevost-second team).
Rapp started all 55 games during the regular
season and batted .324 with a team-high 16 doubles, nine home runs and 48
RBIs. He ranked fifth in the Sun Belt
with 116 total bases and a .545 slugging percentage.
A three-time Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week
recipient in 2012, Zeigler's 97.2 innings and three complete games were the
most among conference pitchers, and his 97 strikeouts were one behind UALR's
Chance Cleveland for the regular season lead.
Zeigler's .220 batting average against was the lowest league-wide over
his conference-high 15 starts.
