BATON ROUGE, La. -- Head coach
Roberto Mazza had his Warhawks in midseason form on offense, as ULM
racked up 19 shots en route to a 2-1 victory over Southern University. The visitors
overwhelmed the Jaguars on the offensive end, posting 12 shots on goal and racking up six
corners to go along with the 19 total shots.
Southern struck first with an early goal, when sophomore Fabiola Parra's shot from
the top of the box deflected off ULM goalie
Alex Holland's hand and into the net at the five
minute mark. After the early goal, the half belonged to the Warhawks.
Mazza's team
racked up a whopping 12 shots, keeping the ball in the Lady Jaguars half of the field for
the majority of the half. The Southern defense held early, though, as goalie Sarah Forde
had six saves. ULM finally broke through with five minutes in the half, when a through ball
from sophomore
Cerene Arsenault was picked up by freshman forward
Kelley O'Dwyer.
O'Dwyer launched a strike from 18 yards that got past Forde and into the goal. It was
O'Dwyers second goal on the season.
The Warhawks relentless attack struck again four minutes later when freshman
midfielder
Kylie Kircher headed in fellow freshman
Karlea Fehr's corner. The ball struck a
southern defender and went into the net. Kircher's first collegiate goal turned out to be the
game winner for ULM.
After an frenetic first half of action, the second half was slower paced, and Southern
was unable to challenge Holland. ULM kept creating action in the Southern half, however,
and ULM freshman
Melissa Heaton just missed extending the Warhawk lead when her
header was saved by a diving Forde in the 74th minute.
The victory moved ULM to 3-6 on the season, while Southern fell to 0-4. The Warhawks
will be back in action on Sept. 23, as they host North Texas in Monroe.
