JONESBORO, Ark. -- Arkansas
State used a strong showing in the first half to defeat ULM 3-0 in Sun Belt
action Friday afternoon at the ASU Soccer Complex. The Red Wolves scored all
three of their goals before halftime, keyed by a pair of goals in the final
nine minutes of the half to take control.
ULM struggled offensively in its first road conference match of the
season with just five shots on the day. Freshman Antonia Land led the Warhawk offensive attack with two shots, while
fellow freshmen Karlea Fehr, Melissa Heaton and Maya Kayyali each had one shot.
Christina Fink put the Red
Wolves on the board at the 15:11 mark as she took a pass from Loren Mitchell and finished past ULM
goalkeeper Alex Holland for the
goal.
Following nearly 20 minutes of scoreless action, Arkansas State added
to its lead in the 35th minute on a goal from Kristina Rivera. The Red Wolves got another opportunity in the 39th
minute when ULM was called for a hand ball in the box. Alex Furr connected on the penalty kick goal to give Arkansas State
a 3-0 advantage at halftime.
The Warhawks held the Red Wolves scoreless in the second half, in large
part because of the effort of Holland. The senior goalkeeper finished with a
season-high 10 saves in the match.
ULM returns to action Sunday with a road trip to UALR with the match
set to tip off at 1 p.m.
