HATTIESBURG, Miss. - ULM
closed out its Mississippi road trip with a 4-1 loss at Southern Miss on Monday
afternoon. The Golden Eagles struck for two goals in the second half to pull
away after the Warhawks kept it close for the first 55 minutes.
"I was proud of the way our girls competed in the first half and we
came out in the second half with a great opportunity to tie the match," ULM head
coach Roberto Mazza said. "We just weren't able to execute down the stretch and
that is something we need to continue to improve on as the season progresses."
Southern Miss (2-1-1) grabbed its first lead of the match in the 17th
minute on a goal by Danica Roberts from 18 yards out.
The Warhawks (2-3) answered in the 33rd minute on freshman Maddy
Chapman's first career goal. The Gautier, Miss., native took advantage of a
mistake by the USM goalkeeper, who dropped a corner kick by sophomore Bethany
Park towards the far post.
The Golden Eagles scored again less than two minutes later when Kristen
Windecker dribbled past the ULM defense and scored in the upper right side from
18 yards out. The goal gave Southern Miss a 2-1 advantage at the break.
Southern Miss broke the match open in the second half with a goal by
Jordan Wagner at the 55:18 mark. The Golden Eagles finished off the scoring
with a penalty kick goal by Roberts in the 65th minute.
Freshman forward Karlea Fehr led the Warhawks with two shots, including
a shot on goal.
