LITTLE
ROCK, Ark. - ULM got a goal from freshman Karlea Fehr in the 57th
minute and held on for a 1-0 victory over UALR Sunday afternoon at the Coleman
Sports & Recreation Complex.
The win snapped a 25-match conference losing streak for the
Warhawks and improved them to 4-8 overall, 1-2 in the Sun Belt this season. It
was also ULM's first shutout in Sun Belt action since a 2-0 victory over UALR
on Oct. 2, 2009.
"I am so proud and happy for our girls, especially the
upperclassmen that have been committed to this program," First year ULM head
coach Roberto Mazza said. "For a lot of them it was long overdue to get this
conference win. They were very emotional after the match and I can understand
why. They have worked so hard for me and for each other all season and it's great
to finally get the monkey off our backs."
Following a scoreless first half, the Warhawks took the lead
at the 56:02 when Fehr stole a pass from the UALR goalkeeper and netted her
team-leading fourth goal of the season from 15 yards out. Fehr, who finished
with a team-high six shots in the match, also leads the team with 12 points and has both of ULM's goals in conference play this season.
The Warhawk defense took over the remainder of the match as
they limited UALR (1-11, 0-4 SBC) to just six shots on goal. ULM senior
goalkeeper Alex Holland earned her second solo shutout of the season as she
finished with six saves in the match. The Las Vegas, Nev., native has 25 saves
through three conference matches this season.
"We can now relax and focus on the remainder of our
conference schedule without having to think about getting our first conference
win, and that has not happened here in over two years," Mazza said. "This is a
big stepping stone for this program and is proof that we are moving in the
right direction."
The Warhawks are back at home on Friday with a showdown
against Middle Tennessee at 3 p.m. at the ULM Soccer Complex.
