ULM Suffers 3-0 Set Back vs. Georgia State

Volleyball

MONROE, La. -- Georgia State took a 3-0 decision over ULM Sunday afternoon in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.  The Warhawks (5-22, 1-10 Sun Belt) suffered their sixth straight loss.

Freshman outside hitter Hope Pawlik recorded her second career double-double, tallying a match-high 12 kills and 10 digs to pace the ULM effort.  Pawlik hit at a .250 clip, committing only three attacking errors on 36 swings.  She accounted for 40 percent of the Warhawk offense.

Senior middle blocker Maria Garcia turned in the best hitting percentage of the night at .267, hitting six kills on 15 attacks with just two errors.  Defensively, junior libero Marcela Araya added 12 digs.

“We have multiple players throughout our lineup who are capable of having great matches.  It's disappointing that we can't seem to be consistent enough to have everyone play well on the same day,” ULM head volleyball coach Patrick Hiltz said after his squad hit just .081 as a team Sunday.

Georgia State's Dede Bohannon and Eliza Zachary also tied for a match-high 12 kills while Natalia Nieto turned in 42 assists.

The Panthers (8-17, 3-7 Sun Belt) took control early in the first set and stayed in the driver's seat.  ULM stayed within two or three points in the early going, but Georgia State created some space and climbed to a 20-13 advantage.  Later in the set and down 24-14, the Warhawks amassed a 4-0 spurt during Pawlik's final serves of the set.  Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as the Panthers took the opener 25-19.

The middle frame saw five of the match's six tie scores and also was the only point where ULM had a brief lead at 5-3. From that point on, the action was back-and-forth until the Panthers used a 5-2 rally to grab a 16-12 lead. ULM would counter with a 6-2 run of its own to knot the match at 18-all but would not regain the lead.  Georgia State went into the locker room with a 2-0 advantage after taking the stanza 25-22.

The Panthers carried the momentum into the third set and clinched the sweep with a 25-15 victory in the finale.

ULM travels to UALR for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Nov. 1.
