Miller's Monster Day Lifts Warhawks in Mardi Gras Classic Day Three Sweep

MONROE, La. -- The ULM Warhawks softball team won both of its games Saturday afternoon, defeating Southeast Missouri State 5-1 and Wichita State 3-1 at the ULM Softball Complex. Sophomore center fielder Mackenzie Miller went a combined 5-for-5 with two triples, an RBI, three stolen bases, and two runs scored.

GAME 1: ULM 5, Southeast Missouri State 1

ULM (2-1) received 5.2 no-hit innings from junior pitcher Stephanie Routzon in its 5-1 victory over SEMO (2-3) Saturday.

The Warhawks got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Senior first baseman Janel Salanoa doubled to lead off the inning. She would move to third and eventually scored on a two-out throwing error by the SEMO catcher.

The Warhawks added some insurance two innings later. Freshman catcher Kayla Prater singled to lead off the inning and scored on fellow freshman Faith Bohack's RBI double down the left field line. Miller would later score on one of two Redhawk errors in the evening.

Routzon surrendered an RBI single to SEMO's Lindsey Patterson to drive in pinch runner Renee Terry for the Redhawks only run of the contest.

Miller belted a two-out triple in the bottom of the sixth that drove in Prater. Bohack then drove in Miller with a single to put the game away for the Warhawks.

GAME 2: ULM 3, Wichita State 1

ULM (3-1) edged Wichita State (1-3) 3-1 in the Warhawks' second and final game Saturday afternoon.

The Warhawks did all of their damage in the bottom of the first. Bohack led off the frame with a bunt single. Sophomore third baseman Alexis Cacioppo drove in Bohack with a double to deep left center for the game's first run.

Senior right fielder Haley McCall's 2-RBI single to score Cacioppo and Salanoa (who reached on a fielder's choice) proved to be the game winning hit.

The Shockers got two hits off sophomore pitcher Haylie Wilson in the first inning, but didn't score until the top of the fourth. In that half-inning, Shocker designated player Brianne Bond hit an RBI single through the right side of the infield with runners at the corners and one out for WSU's only run of the game.

After the run, Wilson allowed just one hit over the next 3.1 innings, surrendering only a 2-out triple in the top of the seventh.

The Warhawks play in the final game of the Mardi Gras Classic Sunday at 4 p.m. against Mississippi Valley State.

Noteworthy: The two victories give Rosemary Holloway-Hill 708 victories at ULM. The Warhawk program is now 11 wins away from 800 in program history. ULM's matchup with Wichita State was the first since 2005 and also the first at a non-neutral site. UCSB (5-0) remains in first place for the tournament. ULM and MVSU are currently tied for second.
