LAFAYETTE, La. -- UL-Lafayette
used a 24-0 run midway through the second half to roll past ULM 90-66 on Sunday
evening inside the Cajundome.
The Warhawks trailed just 54-50 on a 3-pointer by sophomore Trent Mackey with 13:20 to play before
going scoreless for just under seven minutes as the Ragin' Cajuns exploded to a
78-50 lead. ULL shot 55.9 percent in the second half and knocked in 10
3-pointers on the night. The Ragin' Cajuns also outscored the Warhawks 10-3 at
the free-throw line in the second half.
Mackey was outstanding for the Warhawks (3-17, 2-12 SBC) in a losing effort, scoring 20
points on 7-of-11 shooting. Mackey knocked in his first four 3-pointers of the
night and finished 6-of-8 from deep on the night. It marked the third time
Mackey has scored 20-plus points this season and the second time he has made
six 3's.
Junior Amos Olatayo was the
only other ULM player in double-digit scoring with 15 points on 6-of-15
shooting. Junior Jayon James
finished with nine points, five rebounds and a team-high six assists.
UL-Lafayette (9-16, 5-9 SBC) had six players in double-figure scoring, led by 24 points
from Bryant Mbamalu. Shawn Long recorded his Sun
Belt-leading 15th double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Ragin' Cajuns opened the game on fire, making four of their first
seven shots and building a 14-4 advantage at the 15:53 mark. ULL led 19-9
before ULM used a 10-2 run - capped by a pair of free throws from Olatayo - to cut
the margin to 21-19 with 8:30 remaining before halftime.
ULL held onto the lead on the strength of its 3-point shooting and led
37-31 at the break. The Ragin' Cajuns shot 48 percent from the field in the
half and knocked down 5-of-10 from 3-point range. The Warhawks countered by
shooting 41 percent.
The Warhawks begin a two-game homestand on Thursday against North Texas
at 7:30 p.m. inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
