LAS
VEGAS - ULM earned its third straight win with a dramatic 6-5
victory over Brigham Young to open play in the UNLV/Easton Desert Classic Friday night.
In the bottom of the seventh, Faith Bohack, representing the winning run, belted a single that moved pinch runner Courtney Dutreix to
third base. Bohack was caught trying to advance to second, but BYU third baseman Katie Manuma overthrew everyone and the
ball rolled to the outfield wall. In the chaos, Dutreix scored easily to tie
the game at five. Meanwhile, Bohack hustled around the base paths and slid head first
into the plate. Initially, Bohack was ruled out, but the ruling was overturned
due to catcher obstruction. Bohack was ruled safe, giving the Warhawks the
victory.
ULM (4-1) burst to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third
thanks to a two-run homer from Janel Salanoa. Elena DiMattia scored on a wild pitch prior to the blast.
BYU (3-5) used a three-run homer in the top of the fifth
to climb to a 4-3 lead. The Cougars added what seemed to be an insurance run in
the top of the seventh, but the Warhawks had other ideas.
Haley McCall set the tone in the bottom of the seventh with
a lead off home run. One batter later,
Cayla Unverzagt reached on an error-one of two in the frame. Bohack's heads
up base-running after her one-out single gave ULM the walk-off win.
Stephanie
Routzon improved to 3-0 on the year. She started the game by
sending down the first nine Cougars she faced before giving up a hit.
ULM is back in action for two games Saturday, taking on No. 7
Oregon at 11 a.m. and Seattle later in the day at 3:30 p.m.
Noteworthy: ULM
is now 2-0 all-time against BYU. Salanoa's blast was the 17th of her career
and first of the season.
