MONORE, La. -- ULM
(7-18, 5-11) started off strong on Saturday afternoon against Arkansas State (14-12, 11-6) but in a
reverse of the season's first meeting, the Red Wolves dominated the second half
and won 77-58.
ASU leads the SBC in field goal percentage at 44% coming
into the contest and blitzed ULM beginning with a 17-6 run to end the first
half and continued the momentum through the second half.
Ashleigh Simmons led the Warhawks with 18 points and seven
rebounds while Jalen O'Bannon and Jane Morrill led the Red Wolves with 20
points each.
ULM's 24 turnovers led to 28 Arkansas State points and ASU was
23-of-25 from the free throw line.
ULM started fast and forced an Arkansas State timeout at the
16:28 mark after a fastbreak layup from Hunter, giving ULM a 12-6 lead. Alexar
Tugler nailed a step-back three-point to extend lead to 15-8 before the first
media timeout.
Despite three straight turnovers, the Warhawks led 23-18 at
the eight-minute media timeout. Sharnice Brooks followed with a three-point
play to extend the lead to eight points.
Arkansas State tied the game, 28-28, on a Morrill turnaround
to beat the shot clock and took its first lead, 30-28, since the 19:24 mark on
fastbreak layup after ULM's 14th turnover.
Morrill ended the half with her second three-pointer of the
day to give the Red Wolves a 37-32 lead at the break. She led all scorers with
14 points. Brooks led ULM with nine points while six other Warhawks scored.
A three-point play from Simmons brought ULM within four at
41-37 at the 17-minute mark. However, ASU extended its lead to 50-37 with 14:19
remaining.
The momentum stayed with the visitors after a three-point play
from Ashley Olvera, giving ASU a 53-39 lead with 12:44 to play. O'Bannon
followed with another three-point play.
The two teams traded baskets but the Warhawks could now slow
ASU's offense and the Red Wolves led 65-49 with 7:35 left on the clock.
Arkansas State cruised the final five minutes to collect its
11th Sun Belt win.
ULM will make its final road trip of the season
beginning on Feb. 20 at Western Kentucky followed by Middle Tennessee on Feb.
