HUNTSVILLE, Texas --
ULM (4-1) senior Cale Wine went the distance as the right-hander scattered
nine hits and allowed just one run while striking out a career-best seven
batters in a 2-1 victory over Sam Houston State (1-4) Friday night at Don
Sanders Stadium.
The two teams traded zeros on the scoreboard for the
first seven innings, but ULM broke through first with two runs in the top of
the eighth. With two outs and the bases
loaded, senior Corben Green stepped into the batter's box. Green delivered as the tallied a two-out,
two-RBI single to left allowing Logan Fiasco and Dalton Herrington to score and
put ULM ahead.
Wine (2-0) didn't allow a base runner to advance past
second base until he ran into trouble in the bottom of the eighth inning. Following back-to-back singles, Colt Atwood loaded
the bases with a bunt down the third base line with no outs. Wine forced Ryan Farney to ground into a
4-6-3 double play as the Bearkats closed the game to 2-1 and moved a runner to
third. Anthony Azar grounded out to
second to end the home half of the eighth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ryan O'Hearn hit a double
that stayed fair near the left field line, but that would be the only base
runner for Sam Houston State as Cale Wine tossed the first complete game of his
Warhawk career. His previous high for
innings pitched was in a relief appearance at Tennessee last season (March 11 -
8.2 innings).
Green led the Warhawks with three hits (all to right
field) with two RBI. Herrington, Fiasco
and Kodie Tidwell combined for the other three Warhawk hits Friday night.
Sam Houston State starter Caleb Smith took the loss and
fell to 0-2 on the season after allowing two earned runs on three hits in 7.1
innings. The junior struck out eight and
walked five in his second start of the season.
Kevin Miller led the Bearkats with a 2 for 3 effort and
one run scored.
Game two of the three game non-conference series will
begin tomorrow at 4 p.m. and the contest can be heard on 540 AM in Monroe. Senior
Shelby Aulds (RHP) is the projected
starter for ULM, while Sam Houston State will counter with junior Cody Dickson
(LHP).
