ULM Falls to Sam Houston State, 4-2; Series Tied at 1-1

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- ULM (4-2) surrendered four runs in the fourth inning as Sam Houston State (2-4) held on for a 4-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium to even the three game series at one-all.

For the second consecutive game a starting pitcher tossed a complete game.  On Friday, it was Warhawk starter Cale Wine, on Saturday, it was Bearkat starter Cody Dickson.  Dickson (1-1) surrendered two runs on seven hits with one walk and nine stikeouts in the complete game effort.

ULM broke through first as Corben Green reached on a dropped fly ball in left allowing Dalton Herrington to score and give ULM a 1-0 advantage after the top of the first inning.

Warhawk starter Shelby Aulds (1-1) kept the Bearkats off the scoreboard for the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth.  Aulds gave up two runs before being replaced by reliever Alex Dumaine with one out and two on in the bottom of the fourth.  Dumaine was unable to record and out and was relieved by Tyler Bray

Bray was able to record back-to-back outs to end the Sam Houston State fourth that featured four runs and a string of five straight hits as 10 men batted in the inning.

ULM cut into the deficit in the sixth as Green drove in Judd Edwards to close the gap to 4-2.  However a baserunning mistake ending the inning as Justin Stawychny was tagged at out home while trying to score after Green was caught after a wide turn around first base.

The Warhawks were able to load the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh inning, but all three base runners were left stranded.

ULM again threatened in the top of the ninth as they had runners at first and second with two outs, but the club was unable to push any runs across as Sam Houston State held on for the 4-2 win.

Green led the Warhawks with a one hit and one RBI and in two games, the senior first baseman has four hits and all three of ULM's RBI.  Bray helped keep ULM in the game as he allowed just one hit in 4.2 innings of work while striking out three batters.

Luke Plucheck led the Bearkats as he collected two hits, one RBI and one run scored.

The two teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.  The game can be heard live on 1680 AM (Monroe) with pregame set to begin at approximately 12:45 p.m.  Trey Setzer (LHP) is scheduled to get the start for ULM, while Sam Houston State will counter with Andrew Godail (LHP).
