HUNTSVILLE, Texas --
ULM (4-3) entered Sunday's contest having committed just one error, but the
Warhawks had three errors Sunday and Sam Houston State (3-4) capitalized on
those miscues in a 7-3 victory at Don Sanders Stadium.
Sam Houston State scored the first run of the game in the
bottom of the first when Carter Burgess scored on a throwing error by Warhawk
shortstop Kodie Tidwell. It was the
first time in the three-game series that the Bearkats scored first.
The Bearkats pushed the lead to 2-0 when Luke Plucheck
drove in Ryan O'Hearn with one out in the second. O'Hearn's unearned run resulted in a call to
the bullpen for ULM. Carey Taylor
replaced Warhawk starter Trey Setzer and limited the damage to a single run as
he forced a fly out to left and a foul popout to first.
ULM trimmed the deficit to one (2-1) in the top of the
third inning. Jeff Fuller recorded ULM's
first hit of the game with a single up the middle to lead off the inning. Fuller moved to second on a passed ball and
was able to score from second when Brandon Alexander reached on a throwing
error after laying down a sacrifice bunt.
Sam Houston State responded with three runs in the bottom
half of the third. Spence Rahm
highlighted the inning with a two-RBI double to the gap in left center.
ULM put the pressure on the Bearkats in the top of the
sixth inning. Chris Dudley ledoff the
inning with a pinch hit single through the right side and advanced 90 feet on a
stolen base. Dudley's single was just
the second hit of the game for the Warhawks.
Judd Edwards followed with a RBI double down the left field line as ULM
climbed within three (5-2).
Justin Stawychny singled as he registered the third straight
hit for ULM and Edwards moved to to third.
With one out in the inning, Taylor Abdalla singled to left allowing
Edwards to score easily but Stawychny was tagged out at third on a bang-bang
play for the second out in the inning.
Kodie Tidwell singled and a wild pitch gave ULM two runners in scoring
position, but a Fuller ground out ended the Warhawk threat.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sam Houston State tacked on
two runs to set the final tally at 7-3.
Setzer was tagged with the loss and falls to 0-2 on the
season after two unearned runs scored during his 1.1 innings of work. Setzer gave up four hits and walked one
batter Sunday. ULM used a total of four
relief pitchers in the contest - Taylor, Christo Jones (first appearance), Chad
Miller and Devin Malone. Seven different
Warhawks recorded a hit and Edwards and Abdalla recorded one RBI each.
Bearkat starter Andrew Godail (1-0) earned the win after
allowing three runs on six hits with one walk and seven punchouts in six
innings on the hill. Ryan O'Hearn led Sam
Houston State with three hits, two runs and one RBI.
ULM will return to action Tuesday evening when they host
Southern Miss. First pitch between the
Warhawks and the Golden Eagles at Warhawk Field is slated for 6 p.m.
