MONROE, La. -- ULM
dropped 7-5 and 4-3 decisions Saturday to visiting Northwestern State to
conclude a home-and-home weekend series.
The Warhawks fall to 8-7 on the season, while the Demons improve to 9-8
on the season.
Northwestern State
7, ULM 5 (DH Game 1)
The Demons opened the scoring with three runs in the top
of the second inning. Matt Baca scored
the game's first run on a RBI single thru the right side by Matt Farmer. Toby Cornejo and Cort Brinson delivered
back-to-back RBI to push its lead to 3-0.
Taylor Abdalla tripled to center field with one out in
the bottom of the second inning and he scored on Dalton Herrington's sacrifice
fly that was snagged by a diving Will Watson.
Abdalla's run closed the gap to two runs (3-1).
Northwestern State pushed its lead back to three runs
(4-1) as Will Watson led off the third inning with a solo homerun to right
center.
ULM chipped into the Northwestern State lead with one run
in the bottom of the fourth as Abdalla sent a 3-2 offering over the wall in
left field to pull the squad within two.
The Warhawks evened the contest with a pair of runs in
the home half of the sixth inning. With
Judd Edwards standing on third thanks to a two base error by Demon relief
pitcher Nick Helmsetetter, pinch hitter Chris Dudley doubled to the gap in left
to trim the lead to one run (4-3).
Brandon Alexander followed with a double to left center allowing Dudley
to score easily and even the game at four-all.
The Demons plated three runs in the top of the eighth
inning en route to a 7-5 victory in game one of Saturday's twinbill. The Northwestern State eighth was highlighted
by a two-out two-RBI single by Will Watson.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Taylor Abdalla led
off the inning with a solo homer to left to conclude the scoring in game
one. Abdalla finished the contest two
homers as he became the first Warhawk since Joey Rapp (Feb. 21, 2012 vs. Tulane
) to record two homeruns in one game.
Abdalla led the Warhawks with three hits, three runs and two RBI.
Jared Dye (1-1) took the loss in relief after allowing
one run on one hit in 0.2 innings of work.
Demon reliever Steven Spann (2-1) earned the win after pitching 2.1
innings, allowing just one run on two hits.
Meanwhile, Cameron Brewer earned his second save of the season after
tossing a scoreless ninth.
Northwestern State
4, ULM 3 (DH Game 2)
In game two of Saturday's twinbill, Northwestern State
scored the first run of the contest as Will Watson drove in Edwin Gomez to give
the Demons a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
ULM moved in front, 2-1, with a pair of runs in the home
half of the fourth inning. Taylor
Abdalla and Judd Edwards recorded back-to-back singles and moved 90 feet closer
to home on a wild pitch by Demon starter Zach Krebs. Chris Dudley drove in Abdalla to even the
contest at one-all. Dalton Herrington
followed with a RBI double to the gap in right center allowing Edwards to score
and put the Warhawks ahead.
The Warhawks increased the lead to two runs, 3-1, when
Kodie Tidwell sent a 3-2 offering over the wall in left field. Tidwell's homer down the left field line was
his second of the season.
The Demons regained the lead with a trio of runs in the
top of the seventh inning. Will Wilson
tallied two RBI on a single to left center while Todd Wallace drove in one to
give the visitors a 4-3 lead.
ULM had the tying run at third base in each of the final
three innings but the Warhawks were unable to push the run across as
Northwestern State held on for the 4-3 victory.
Brandon Alexander led the Warhawks in game two with three
hits including two doubles. Reliever Tyler
Bray (1-1) was tagged with the loss after one unearned run scored during his
2.2 innings of work. Bray allowed two
hits and walked one while striking out three during his 42-pitch outing.
Northwestern State was led by Will Watson's two hits and
three RBI in the weekend finale. Ashton
Sivigliano improved to 2-0 on the season after allowing just one run on five
hits in four innings of relief. Cameron
Brewer earned his second save of the day after allowing just one hit in the
ninth inning.
ULM will return to action Tuesday night when they host
Ole Miss at Warhawk Field. First pitch
between the Warhawks and the Rebels is scheduled for 6 p.m.
