Softball Sweeps Lamar in Thursday Doubleheader

Softball

MONROE, La. -- ULM (13-14) extended its winning streak to three games with a sweep of Lamar (11-15) in Thursday's doubleheader at the ULM Softball Complex. The Warhawks used solid pitching to edge the Lady Cardinals 5-1 in the opener and spectacular defense in the nightcap in a 6-3 victory.

Mackenzie Miller went 3-for-6 on the day with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored on top of stellar defense in both contests.

GAME ONE - ULM 5, Lamar 1

ULM scored early in the opener and did not look back in its 5-1 win over Lamar.

Pitcher Haylie Wilson struck out four and held the Lady Cardinals to one run to win her fourth consecutive game.

The Warhawks got on the board in the bottom of the second when Haley McCall scored on a Lady Cardinals' throwing error. Later, Courtney Dutreix was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the second run.

The Warhawks added some insurance in the bottom of the fourth. Summer Melancon led things off with a double. Melancon came around to score on Miller's one-out double to left. Miller stole third then later scored thanks to heads up base running while Dutreix was cut down trying to steal second.

Lamar's Casey Cromwell spoiled Wilson's shutout bid with a one-out solo home run in the top of the sixth.  However, ULM got the run back in the bottom of the frame when Miller scored on Lamar's second error of the day.

Wilson improved to 6-8 with the complete game victory.

GAME TWO - ULM 6, Lamar 3

The Warhawks slugged out a 6-3 win in Thursday's finale. The teams hit five combined home runs in the contest, but it was ULM's pair of two-run blasts that proved to be the difference.

Janel Salanoa's two-run home run in the bottom of the third on the first pitch of the at bat proved to be the game winning hit.

ULM got on the board in the bottom of the first on McCall's bases loaded walk.

Lamar's Beverly Corry led off the top of the second with a solo blast to deep left to even things up at one. The Lady Cardinals added a base hit after the home run, but any threat was quickly erased. On the next batter, Miller ranged into right center and made a beautiful grab on a hard hit ball from Julianne Viator. Miller quickly recovered and tagged up Casey Cromwell at first base on a deadline throw.

Stephanie Meeuwsen hit a solo home run in the top of the third to give the Lady Cardinals their only lead of the day.

After Salanoa's home run gave ULM a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third, the Warhawks got an RBI double from Melancon--her third two-base knock of the evening.

Alexis Cacioppo added a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to give the Warhawks a 6-2 advantage.

Lamar got a run back in the top of the fifth on Meeuwsen's second homer of the evening.

Stephanie Routzon earned the win and improved to 7-5 on the year. Savannah Dollar struck out three in two innings of relief and recorded ULM's first save of the year.

ULM returns to action Tuesday at McNeese State. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
