NATCHITOCHES, La. --
Pinch hitter Justin Stawychny drove in what proved to be the game-winning
runs as ULM (8-5) defeated Northwestern State (7-8) by a score of 4-2 in 10
innings Friday night at Brown-Stroud Field.
Dalton Herrington led off the top of the 10th with a
single to right field and moved to second on Jeff Fuller's sacrifice bunt. With two outs in the inning, Brandon
Alexander drew a walk and Stawychny pinched hit for Chris Dudley. Stawychny's double fell along the line in
left field allowing Herrington and Alexander to score to lift the Warhawks to
victory.
Shelby Aulds (2-1) earned the win in relief after
allowing just one run on two hits with one strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Starter Carey Taylor earned a no-decision
after surrendering one run on three hits with three walks and a career-high
five strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
ULM scored the first two runs of the game with a single
run in the top of the first and the second.
Corben Green plated the first run of the game with a solo homer to right
field. The Warhawks pushed their lead to
2-0 when Jeff Fuller delivered a two-out RBI double to right as Edwards scored.
Northwestern State evened the contest with a single run
in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings. Matt Baca's RBI groundout in the eighth evened
the contest and after neither team scored in the ninth the two teams headed to
extra innings.
ULM improved to 1-0 in extra inning games this season
(squad was 7-2 in extra inning games last season), while Northwestern State
fell to 1-1 in extra inning games.
Brandon Alexander reached base four times Friday as he
tallied two hits and drew two walks, while Stawychny led the club with two RBI.
Demon reliever Steven Spann was tagged with the loss and
fell to 1-1 after allowing two runs on two hits with one walk in one inning of
work. Starter Robert Baker surrendered
two runs on five hits with four walks and six punchouts in nine innings Friday.
ULM and Northwestern State will return to the diamond
tomorrow afternoon, this time in Monroe, with a doubleheader scheduled to begin
at 2 p.m. Saturday's twinbill will be
broadcasted on 1680 AM, not 540 AM as previously scheduled.
