Cacioppo propels Softball Past Central Arkansas

MONROE, La. -- Alexis Cacioppo drilled a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel the ULM softball team to a 3-2 victory over Central Arkansas on Wednesday afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex.

Cacioppo did all the offensive damage for the Warhawks (19-27) with a pair of homers and three RBIs on the day. Her second home run picked up a stellar pitching performance by Stephanie Routzon, who allowed just two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out four over seven innings to improve to 11-12 on the season.

Central Arkansas (31-17) scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to grab a 2-1 advantage. However, Haley McCall opened the bottom half of the seventh inning with a single to right field off UCA starter Kelsie Armstrong and Cacioppo hammered the third pitch she saw over the fence in right center, her team-leading eighth home run of the season, to end the game.

Cacioppo put the Warhawks on the board in the fourth inning with a solo shot  to left center that gave ULM a 1-0 lead. That looked to be enough run support for Routzon, who rolled through five innings before giving up a run in the sixth inning, fueled by her throwing error with two outs.

The Bears added a run in the seventh on an RBI double by Sam Forrest, scoring Amy Gunnells.

Armstrong was also strong in the circle, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out six batters in six-plus innings of work for Central Arkansas.

ULM is back in action this weekend with a three-game conference series at North Texas.
