MONROE, La. – After ULM closed to within one run in the fourth, South Alabama scored five of the final six runs to claim a 7-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Warhawk Field.
South Alabama (34-12, 15-6) struck first as Nick Zaharion led off the second inning with a solo homer over the wall in right center to give the Jaguars a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, the Jaguars doubled their lead as Dustin Dalken drove home Jordan Patterson with a RBI single to left field.
Dalton Herrington connected on his fifth homer of the season as his solo blast with one out in the fourth closed the gap to one run (2-1).
In the sixth inning, South Alabama struck for two runs to push its lead to three runs. Both Patterson (double) and Nolan Earley (single) each recorded a RBI in the frame.
ULM (16-29, 5-16) answered with a single run in the sixth as Taylor Abdalla scored from second thanks to a fielding error at third that allowed Jeff Fuller to reach first base. The Warhawks were unable to add any more runs as two runners were left stranded on base.
The Jaguars plated one run in the eighth and two in the ninth to conclude the scoring in Sunday's game as the visiting club claimed a 7-2 victory.
The loss was credited to starter Shelby Aulds (4-5). The senior allowed four earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts during his 106-pitch outing.
Fuller and Judd Edwards led the Warhawks with two hits each in the series finale.
South Alabama starter Jacob Noble (5-1) earned the win as he surrendered two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks. Noble struck out two during his five innings of work. Patterson earned his second save of 2013 as he tossed two shutout innings. Zaharion led the Jaguars with two hits, two RBI and two runs.
The Warhawks will return to action Tuesday evening when they travel to Southern Miss for the final non-conference game of the season. First pitch between the two teams is slated for 6 p.m. in Hattiesburg, Miss.
