MONROE, La. -- A grandslam by Chase Compton broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the eighth inning and the Ragin' Cajuns picked up a 13-4 win over the Warhawks Friday night at Warhawk Field.
Senior Cale Wine, making his final collegiate start, worked into the eighth inning and struck out the first two batters he faced but ran into trouble and surrendered three straight walks. Wine (6-8) left the game on a 2-1 count to Compton and he was replaced by Carey Taylor. Taylor surrendered the grandslam on a 3-2 count as UL-Lafayette (37-17, 18-11) took its first lead of the game at 8-4.
An inning later, the Ragin Cajuns concluded the scoring with a five-run frame highlighted by Dex Kjerstad's two-run homer to left.
Wine suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs (seven total) on 11 hits with three walks and five strikeouts. In his final game as a Warhawk, the senior tossed 119 pitches.
Justin Stawychny tallied two hits for the Warhawks (18-35, 7-22) while Judd Edwards collected his third homer of the season and finished with two RBI and two runs.
UL-Lafayette reliever Ben Frith (2-0) earned the win despite throwing just eight pitches. He faced three batters and surrendered just one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Kjerstad and Michael Strentz led the Ragin' Cajuns as they each tallied three hits, two RBI and two runs.
ULM broke through first with a pair of runs in the home half of the third. Edwards scored on Corben Green's fielder's choice to put ULM in front, 1-0. Later in the inning, Taylor Abdalla was able to score thanks in large part to a throwing error by shortstop Blake Trahan.
After UL-Lafayette pushed across one run in the top of the fourth, the Warhawks responded in the bottom of the inning. With two outs in the inning and Dalton Todd standing on second, Edwards hit a homer over the wall in left to put the Warhawks ahead, 4-1.
UL-Lafayette scored a single run in the fifth and tied the game in the sixth with a pair of runs (including one unearned).
The Warhawks will conclude their 2013 campaign as they host the Ragin' Cajuns tomorrow night at 6 p.m. ULM will honor its seniors with a pre-game ceremony beginning at 5:30 p.m.
