CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- ULM senior safety Isaiah Newsome has been named to the 2013 College Football Performance Awards Defensive Back Trophy Watch List
"Congratulations to Isaiah Newsome on earning a spot on the 2013 CFPA Defensive Awards Watch List," said CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. "Newsome will be one of the top defensive players to watch in his senior season with the Warhawks."
Last season, Newsome was selected as a second team member by the Sun Belt Conference as well as the Louisiana Sports Writer's Association. Newsome led the Warhawks with four interceptions while amassing 57 total tackles (36 solo) and five pass breakups.
Newsome's biggest play of the year came in the conference opener at Middle Tennessee. The Petal, Miss., native intercepted Logan Kilgore in the endzone to end a Blue Raider drive with over eight minutes to play with ULM in front 31-17. Newsome's interception set up a clock bleeding drive as the Warhawks ran out the clock to preserve the 14-point victory in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
The Warhawks open the 2013 campaign against the Oklahoma Sooners on August 31. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. in Norman, Okla., and the game will be aired on Fox Sports Network (Pay-Per-View).
All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration. More than 130 CFPA recipients have signed professional contracts, and twenty-one have been first-round NFL Draft selections.
The full list of 2013 CFPA recipients will be announced on January 8, 2014.
