MONROE, La. – Leading their teams to victories over the weekend, ULM football's Cortney Davis earned Warhawk Male of the Week, while soccer's Jenna Pillon was named Warhawk Female of the Week.
In the home opener against Grambling State, Davis electrified the crowd of 23,600 at Malone Stadium as he returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. The return, a career-long, was the first return for a touchdown of his Warhawk career and it helped give ULM a 7-0 lead just 10 seconds into the contest. The Warhawks went on to claim victory by a score of 48-10.
Davis' kickoff return for a score was the first for the Warhawks since Luther Ambrose accomplished the feat against FIU on Nov. 19, 2011. The Gladewater, Texas native returned another kickoff for 12 yards as he finished with 101 return yards and 103 all-purpose yards (two rushing yards). Davis also earned Kickoff Returner Performer of the Week Honors from the College Football Performance Awards.
For his career, Davis has 849 career return yards, placing him eighth in school history.
Pillon, who ranks fourth in the nation with seven goals on the season, scored a pair in both games over the weekend to lead the Warhawks to 2-0 record. The first was a soaring header off a corner kick against UAPB, and the second came off a through-ball that she rolled past the keeper. She also registered an assist in the game after a header pass set up Allie Dickson for her first collegiate score.
Against Northwestern State, Pillon received a pass from the front of the goal and gave the keeper no chance with a finish in the right side. Her fourth goal of the weekend was on a powerful shot after a dash down the middle of the field. Pillon shook off a pair of defenders down the center and blew one past the keeper.
The Long Beach, Calif., native is already chasing the ULM single-season goals record of 10 held by Chelsea Shriner in 2001 and Kortney Harris in 2004. Pillon's seven scores have come in just five games as she missed a pair due to an injury precaution.
