MONROE, La. – The ULM soccer program completed an undefeated four-game home stand with a 2-0 victory over Southern on Sunday at the ULM Soccer Complex.
Freshmen Abigail Canny and Allie Dickson each scored in the first half to lead ULM (4-4-1) offensively. The Warhawks outshot Southern (0-5-1) 27-7, including 14-3 on shots on goal.
“Today was a good game. We got to use a lot of players and everyone stepped it up. It was one-way traffic all game long,” said ULM head coach Roberto Mazza. “I was really proud of Amanda Borstelmann. She was the player of the game and really held it together for us in the middle.”
Canny, from Plano, Texas, scored her first career goal in the first minute of the game to get ULM started. Freshman Jenna Pillon put a shot on target that Southern goalkeeper Kerrin Hall knocked out, but Canny was right there for the rebound and finished on the left side.
“The goal definitely got us going. Pillon worked really hard to get that goal and I was just glad I was there to finish it off,” said Canny.
The Warhawks added on in the 29th minute on Dickson's second goal of the season. Mariah Mitchell fed Borstelmann who made a nice run down the middle. After clearing space, Borstelmann laid it off to Dickson who applied the finishing touch.
“The first half goals set the tone, but we have to keep the foot on the gas. We had some quality chances in the second half that we didn't finish that could have really opened up this game, but I am proud of the girls. This is back-to-back weekends where we haven't lost a game,” said Mazza.
Freshman Katherine Werther got the nod in net and made three saves, including two consecutively on a one-on-one opportunity that the Jaguars had in the second half. Werther improved her record to 1-0 on the season.
ULM did not allow a goal on the weekend as they held Southeastern Louisiana to a 0-0 tie on Friday. The Warhawks started nine freshmen for the sixth consecutive game and 15 newcomers played.
“We've stepped up our communication and know how to work together on the defense. Our goalkeeper's have also really stepped up lately,” said junior Cerene Arsenault, who played all 200 minutes as a central defender on the weekend.
Southern, which tied UL-Lafayette earlier this season, was led by Jami Blackston and Fabiola Parra who each recorded a pair of shots.
Pillon led ULM with a game-high six shots on goal and eight total. Sophomore Karlea Fehr fired six shots including a pair on net.
ULM is currently on its longest unbeaten streak since 2005 when the team won a program-record five games in a row. The Warhawks will look to further extend their streak when they travel to Central Arkansas on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
