PHOENIX -- ULM began its four-match trip to Arizona by dropping a 3-0 decision to Grand Canyon late Thursday night.
The Warhawks got good efforts from
Maria Garcia (six kills on 16 attacks; .250 hitting percentage),
Kayla Kane (16 assists), Hadley Swatz (seven kills, 10 digs) and
Marcela Araya (12 digs).
ULM (3-10) hung tight with the 'Lopes (6-5) in the opening set. Down 20-13, Warhawks head coach
Patrick Hiltz used a timeout to get his team refocused. After the pause, ULM went on a 7-5 rally to end the set, but Grand Canyon took the opener 25-20.
The Warhawks got out to an early 9-4 lead in the second set however the Lopes strung together a 15-6 scoring burst before ULM used a timeout to regroup. Once again, the Warhawks came of the break with fervor and ended the set on a 7-5 rally, but once again GCU had a 25-22 advantage at the end.
The Lopes used the momentum gained to take the final set 25-7.
